Our Roots

Before the launching of the WAW Initiative, in March 2011, and its hosting at FAO Headquarters, CIRAD had developed a scientific network from June 2009 up to December 2011, which was aiming at making use of existing knowledge concerning changing performance of the different types of agricultural holdings in relation with the economical, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. This network, called “Observatoire des Agricultures du Monde” (OAM), created a common reference framework to compare various types of agriculture and  get them into perspective. It constituted the conceptual roots of WAW. OAM, as a Research Network led by CIRAD, developed during this two years period joined research activities with local partners in Costa Rica, Madagascar, Mali, Niger and Thailand.
